Getting Started
Do I need experience to make wine?
No. With the right supplies and a little guidance, beginners can successfully make wine on their first batch.
How long does it take to make wine?
Most wines are ready in about 4–8 weeks, though additional aging can improve flavor.
How much wine does a batch make?
A standard 6-gallon batch produces about 28–30 bottles of wine.
Juice & Ingredients
When is wine juice available?
Juice packs are typically available seasonally in the fall. Contact us for current availability.
What’s the difference between fresh juice and wine kits?
Juice packs offer a more traditional winemaking experience, while kits are more convenient and consistent for beginners.
Fermentation
How do I know when fermentation is done?
Fermentation slows significantly and bubbling stops. A hydrometer can confirm when sugar has been fully converted.
What temperature should wine ferment at?
Most wines ferment best between 65–75°F. Keeping a stable temperature is important for quality.
Wine Chemistry
What are tartrates?
Tartrates are natural crystals that can form during fermentation or cold stabilization. They are harmless and do not affect the quality of your wine.
How does metabisulfite affect wine?
It helps eliminate unwanted bacteria and wild yeast, allowing controlled fermentation with wine yeast.
How does oxygen affect wine?
Too much exposure to oxygen after fermentation can cause wine to spoil or turn into vinegar, so minimizing air exposure is important.
Troubleshooting & Support
Why is my wine cloudy?
Cloudiness is usually caused by leftover particles or yeast. It often clears over time or with proper racking.
What if fermentation stops early?
This can happen due to temperature changes or weak yeast. In many cases, fermentation can be restarted.
